Tellico Village Lake House
College Daughter's Retreat

It’s no secret that many folks are fleeing the wild, wild west for a more laid back, affordable lifestyle in Tennessee. This is true for our Tellico Village Lakeside Living clients who hired the Rowan Hall team to renovate their new home last year. We gave their great room a rustic, contemporary new look, brought their powder room into this century, made their primary bedroom an oasis, and even upgraded their kitchen

Although their fabulous new digs were purchased to usher them into their new chapter as empty nesters, the kiddos away at college still needed a landing pad–and it didn’t hurt that it would be lakeside! Their son claimed a basement bedroom, and their daughter decided a main level, hunter-green bedroom would be the perfect place to rest during breaks from school.

Gone With the Green

Although shades of green are certainly coming back in style, this particular color really dated this room. Furthermore, the green was only an accent to the two-tone chair rail style of decades past. Alfie is not a fan of this trend, especially not in a bedroom. It’s common to see this in a dining room, and in Alfie’s words, “it’s not a crime, but maybe it should be.”

Instead of removing the trim altogether, we opted to paint the walls and trim one color. The trim detailing is still there, but it’s not as noticeable. The paint job did wonders for this room by making the ceiling look taller and not breaking up the walls like before. With just one simple color change, the molding doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb and the room looks so much bigger. That’s the kind of expertise you get when working with experienced interior designers!

Carpet and Curtains

Next, we upgraded the carpet to something that brings more of an elevated feel. The subtle pattern gives the same effect that an area rug would bring to this space, so we chose to forego an additional rug for now. The existing valances had to go, so we installed custom window treatments in a much more modern style. We opted for our signature pleated panel with simple black hardware–a classic look that will be “in” for years to come!

We decided to give this spacious bedroom a lounge area, primarily for their daughter to use when she’s home from school. Our vision was a comfortable space where she could curl up with a book or sit back and enjoy the views of Tellico Lake. This room can double as a guest suite for other visitors or a retreat for anyone in the household. During the height of Covid, it was prevalent on peoples’ minds to have alternative workspaces in their home, and this would also make a great place for that.

Classic with a Flair

The clients purchased a new bed for the primary suite, but their old one was still beautiful and in great condition. We decided to utilize that bed in this room, while bringing in new bedding and nightstands to make the space feel brand new.

We wanted to keep the overall space very classic and timeless, but incorporated some retro-inspired elements to give a more modern feel. We brought in custom pieces that were arranged in a way that makes the room feel much bigger. A geometric table with a wood top combines the mid-century vibe with the rustic touches sprinkled throughout the home.

Finally, the finishing touches complete this relaxing bedroom oasis. Calming shades of light green, nature-inspired artwork and natural elements make this room a retreat to be missed while the clients’ daughter is away at school. Something tells us that’s exactly what they were hoping for!

If your kiddos are grown and moved off, their childhood bedrooms might be collecting dust and unsuitable for guests. Maybe you’ve moved and want to give your adult children a place to land that can be useful to you while they’re away. The Rowan Hall team can help turn your extra bedroom into a multi-use space where you can proudly invite guests to stay! Tellico Village Lake House
Primary Bedroom Part I

It’s been a little while since we’ve visited our Tellico Village Lake House project from last year, so today we’re moving into the primary bedroom for a two-part breakdown of our clients’ cozy retreat. Before we could bring in beautiful pillows and the perfect custom draperies to complete this space, we had to address some structural elements that were really dating the room as a whole.

West Coast Meets East Tennessee

Our clients became the owners of this waterfront home on Tellico Lake in 2021 when they moved from California to East Tennessee, and we can’t blame them for being drawn to the beautiful backdrop of Loudon County. They found that after selling their home in California, they could get a lot more house for the same money in Tennessee. They found a home they loved in Tellico Village, but the existing interior design and decor were showing its age.Knoxville interior design firm, Rowan Hall interiors, living room renovation with stone fireplace, styled 3 drawer chests, wooded artwork with frame, custom upholstered ottoman and secional, custom geometric patterned chairs in custom designed living room renovation in Tellico Village Tennessee, overlooking Tellico lake

They decided to engage our team at Rowan Hall Interiors to do a total interior renovation. As a Knoxville based interior design firm, Tellico Village is a short trip for us. We’re lucky to get to work in such beautiful locations on Tellico Lake, along the Tennessee River and even into the Smoky Mountains. We travel all around Knox County, but since we are located in Farragut, Loudon County is an easy trip for our design team!

An Owner’s Retreat

When we turned our attention to the primary bedroom, we started by identifying several structural elements that were showing its age. We knew there were other areas of the home that would need more work than this room, so we chose to make minimal changes that would drastically improve the look and value of the primary bedroom.

One culprit was the double-sided fireplace that served both the bedroom and the bathroom — a common feature in homes built in the early 2000s. It would have been a hefty investment to completely change that configuration right now, so we decided to postpone that part of the renovation. We’re currently beginning a renovation in their primary bathroom, so stay tuned to find out the fate of the fireplace. For now, we closed up the niche in the wall, a small change that made the entire space less of an eye sore.

We also opted to remove the built-in bar and sink area. This feature screamed “2000” and really dated the room. We demoed the cabinetry, closed off the plumbing and filled in the wall. In the process, we reclaimed the space back into the main closet, giving the owners more room for shoe storage. Instead of allowing this niche to turn into wasted space, our expert design team thoughtfully planned for a new way our clients could utilize the few square feet in a way that would be much more functional for them.

Back to the Future

Another popular pick from 2001 was this dark beige paint color, which we promptly updated to a more neutral-toned hue. Mindful Gray from Sherwin Williams is a happy medium between gray and beige, and it certainly helps bring this space into the current decade.

We replaced the old, dated ceiling fan with a sleek new fixture, and we replaced the carpeting. In this case, we opted for beautiful new carpeting that will be soft on our clients feet and dampen any noise. This stain-resistant pick was an updated shade and style, eliminating the need for an area rug. This was an ideal solution for this busy family and their four-legged friends. While we installed a beautiful engineered hardwood in the kitchen, great room, dining room and powder room, this carpet was a practical, low maintenance choice that helped take years off the look of this primary bedroom.

Tellico Village Lake House
Great Room Part II

In our previous post, we broke down how our Knoxville Interior Design team tackled the great room phase of the Tellico Village lakefront home we renovated earlier this year. In that installment, we detailed the architectural aspects of the renovation, from selecting stone to flooring from our trusted East Tennessee vendors. In this post, we’ll be shifting our focus to the room’s more aesthetic upgrades.

A Blank Canvas

The centerpiece of the great room was its array of floor-to-ceiling windows, which serve up gorgeous views of Tellico Lake. We complemented them with custom window treatments, going with something that was light and airy to frame the view. This included simple black wrought iron drapery curtain hardware and custom panels featuring a soft geometric pattern that coordinated beautifully with the color of the walls while still allowing the light to be the focus.

The room’s high vaulted ceilings made for many tall, blank walls, so we needed something to counterbalance that strong fireplace. On the left side of the room, we mounted a set of three oversized medallions to provide some visual interest without overwhelming the room.

These matching pieces enhance the symmetry of the room and bring in some great storage space. We styled a funky branch arrangement to add some movement and visual interest to the room. You may notice throughout our portfolio that Alfie has an untreatable addiction to sticks and branches. Please don’t call the police if you see her on the side of the road around Farragut, Tennessee with hedge trimmers. She’s doing it for the art! A pair of quiet framed pieces of artwork complete the look. (Notice the subject matter. One might say it’s further evidence of the worsening branch addiction.)

Customized Coziness

We created a nice seating area, anchored by a custom leather sectional. It was important to provide quality pieces with durability that will last this couple for years to come. This was a reasonable piece to splurge on because it’s the primary seating that the family will use, and we wanted it to be comfortable for the family.

We opted for upgraded cushions, and we chose a custom nailhead color.  Custom upholstery allows for customization of every option under the sun. From the firmness of the cushions in the seats to the amount of filling in the backs, we make sure the comfort level of each sofa is customized to the needs of our clients.

The heavy geometric pattern on these chairs is strong enough to carry the room without the need for larger chairs. Once again, we customized the cushioning and fill, specifically for our clients’ parents who would be visiting their Tellico Village home frequently. The extra-firm cushions and sturdy arms make them easy to get in and out of as we age. These are the perks of working with a full service design team! Customized details for every piece.

We layered the tray with a few decorative pieces to add interest without giving the room too many decorative pieces to dust.

Style meets Function

great room renovation, living room custom furnishings, and custom window treatments on Tellico lake completed by Knoxville interior designer, Alfie Rowan, rowan Hall interiors, interior designers in Knoxville tennesseeAlfie fought hard for a chandelier (she’s still crying over the fact that there’s not one in this room), but the clients insisted on a fan instead. They ultimately opted for function over beauty, but beauty wasn’t sacrificed too greatly with this magnificent ceiling fan. Because of the high ceilings and enormous windows, Alfie knew this would facilitate air flow, so she went searching for an amazing fan to make her clients happy! This is typical for our team of Knoxville interior designers. We work directly with clients to enhance their living spaces while also taking their specific needs into consideration.

In our last post,we mentioned the new engineered hardwood floors we installed. We also added a beautiful hand-knotted rug. This particular rug has a lot of texture, and in this case, it adds warmth, but it could also be somewhat forgiving if their 4-legged baby were to track in dirt. We love finding the perfect rug for our clients! We have many unique trusted sources to make sure we find the right fit for each space.

Ultimately, this great room is extremely livable, and the materials are durable. We used many performance fabrics that won’t stain easily, and we put thought into every material and selection made. This room was meant to be used by the family.  Our clients sit here every day, and now they can watch television or have cocktails at night without fear of ruining a delicate space. It’s not only a beautiful great room, but it’s also functional and comfortable for our lovely clients.

Tellico Village Lake House
Great Room Part I

You’ve seen the powder room, the kitchen, and the dining room. Next up, we’re sharing part one of the great room renovation. This was a remodeling and decorating project for some Californian clients who were relocating to Tellico Village. They bought a 20-year-old lakefront home with so much hidden potential underneath its dated appearance. In this next phase of the project, we were challenged with making the great room as beautiful as the lake views these homeowners moved across the country to enjoy. Aside from some much needed upgrades, the room was nice and open and had gorgeous windows.READ MORE

Tellico Village Lake House
Dining Room

The story begins with an outdated lake house and a carpeted dining room, and luckily, it ends with a brand new space complete with the perfect table, chairs, buffet, artwork, and more. Now, this family has a stunning space to gather when their family comes to visit their new home.

We’ve been sharing a series of behind-the-scenes peeks at a total-home makeover we completed earlier this year for new clients who had recently relocated to Tellico Village from California. Their story is an increasingly common one: Family moves to Tennessee for its more affordable cost of living. In this case, our clients were able to apply their newfound buying power to a 21-year-old home right on the shores of Tellico Lake.

The down side was that the house was dated, aesthetically speaking. No home is perfect, but Rowan Hall Interiors was able to come to the rescue with a little bit of vision and updating. As we so often do, we were able to help make a great home look a whole lot better, stripping away years from the appearance and updating it in a way that added value to the property.
