Sun, Surf… and Studying? Why Our Work Trips Are All About You
What happens in Naples… gets brought back to East Tennessee homes!

*This gorgeous Naples retreat is not our work, but it is our inspiration! Built by Waterside Builders, designed by MHK Architecture, and styled by L Design Studio, this home gets the official Alfie approval and is certifiably dreamy! *

Okay, let’s be honest. When you hear your designer is headed off to sunny Naples, Florida, your mind probably goes straight to visions of me sipping a cocktail with a little umbrella in it, gazing out over the water from a gorgeous hotel balcony. And… I mean, you’re not wrong! There was sunshine. There were beautiful views. There may or may not have been a divine lemon martini involved (strictly for research purposes, of course).

But here’s the thing: these work trips are exactly that—work. Fun? Absolutely. Inspiring? 100%! But at the heart of these adventures is our mission to bring the very best ideas, craftsmanship, and luxury touches back home to you here in East Tennessee.

The world of design is always moving, always changing. New products, fresh trends, smarter ways of doing things—they’re popping up faster than I can finish my second espresso. And as Knoxville interior designers, it’s our job to keep up, so your home reflects the latest in both style and function.

Why We Hit the Road (and Occasionally the Beach)

Sure, the travel looks glamorous. (And, let’s be real, I’m not mad about a pretty hotel room or a spectacular meal!) But what I’m really doing when I’m touring $35 million estates or swapping notes with other designers over dinner is soaking up everything that can make your home more beautiful, more functional, and more you.

What makes trips like this so educational isn’t just the location: it’s also the incredible people I get to learn from while I’m there.

Picture this: a room full of the brightest minds in interior design—people who’ve tackled everything from New York penthouses to coastal retreats in California, to mountain lodges in Colorado. Then add seasoned industry pros who know everything there is to know about custom furnishings, innovative materials, and construction best practices. That’s who I’m spending time with on these trips.

We trade stories, share tips, compare notes on what’s working (and what’s not), and swap ideas for making the design process easier and more enjoyable for our clients. I pick up clever new ways to manage timelines, source special products, and create that “wow” factor that makes your home feel completely custom.

So, while the sunshine and ocean breeze don’t hurt, the real value of these trips comes from the connections made and the knowledge gained. I come home with a brain full of fresh ideas and a heart full of excitement, ready to translate it all into spaces that feel uniquely you—with that perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and thoughtful detail.

Why Staying on Top of Trends Matters

Here’s the truth: design isn’t static. What felt fresh five years ago might feel tired today. Materials get smarter, lighting gets more efficient, furniture gets more functional—and let’s not even get started on how fast color trends change (Sylvia keeps me on my toes there!).

By staying ahead of the curve, I can help you avoid design choices that might feel dated before the paint even dries. Whether it’s the latest in custom furnishings, innovative storage solutions, or sustainable materials that are as kind to the planet as they are beautiful, my job is to sift through all the trends and bring just the right ones home to you. The goal? Spaces that feel current, but timeless. Luxurious, but livable. Yours, but better than you even imagined.

What We Bring Back Besides a Nice Tan

On this latest trip to Naples, I saw craftsmanship that literally made me stop and stare. I’m talking solid wood stair treads carved from single tree trunks—no piecing together, no shortcuts, just pure artistry. I saw concealed vents so sleek you’d forget HVAC was even a thing. I marveled at imaginative tilework, light-up bars, and elevators (yes, plural!) clad in ways that made them architectural statements.

And while I do love a fabulous light fixture or a jaw-dropping bar backsplash, what I really love is figuring out how to translate these ideas for our custom home Knoxville clients. Maybe it’s that hidden door behind wallpaper that’s perfect for your pantry. Maybe it’s outdoor furniture and landscaping ideas that bring a bit of that Naples lifestyle to your back patio.

The Truth Behind the Travel

So yes, I travel. Yes, I eat amazing food (and yes, I take pictures of it). And yes, I stay in beautiful places because great design is everywhere—including in a well-thought-out hotel room! But when I’m away, I’m constantly thinking about you. What can I learn? What can I see? What can I bring home to make your home something really special?

These trips fill my design cup so that I can come back and pour that inspiration into your project—from the Welcome Packet & Consultation to the final reveal (where hopefully you’ll be the one enjoying a cocktail in your gorgeous new space).

Bottom Line: We Go So You Can Have the Fun at Home

Our work trips might look like play, but they’re really about gathering fresh ideas, finding innovative products, and making sure you get the best of what’s out there. So next time you see a sunny snap from one of my adventures, just know—I’m doing it all for you!

If you’re ready to bring a little of that sun, surf, and luxury home to your own space, give us a call. Let’s create something wonderful together!

Inside High Point Market
A Designer's Journey with Alfie Rowan

At Rowan Hall Interiors, we believe in staying at the forefront of design trends and innovations to provide our clients with exceptional service and timeless style. We prioritize professionalism in the design community and do our best to build relationships with industry professionals, so we can bring the best to our clients.

That’s why every spring, our founder, Alfie Rowan, heads to High Point Market—a premier destination where industry professionals come together to explore, learn, and be inspired by the latest and greatest in the world of interior design. Today, we’re sharing the reasons why Alfie prioritizes this trip and how beneficial High Point Market is for Rowan Hall Interiors.

Gathering Information and Knowledge

For our Knoxville interior design team, attending High Point Market is more than just a shopping trip—it’s an invaluable opportunity to gather information and knowledge that directly impacts our clients’ projects. From meeting with favorite vendors to seeing products firsthand and learning about upcoming trends, Market provides a comprehensive overview of what’s on the horizon for home interiors. Alfie understands the importance of selecting quality, comfortable pieces for our clients, which is why she meticulously tests new furniture frames, evaluates colors in person, and assesses the feel of fabrics during her time at Market.

Seeing potential furnishings and decor items online can’t compare to touching and feeling them in person. We’re able to assess scale, comfort and quality of items at Market, and Alfie spends the weekend making mental notes of pieces she would install in a clients’ home. She tests sofas, finds chairs for clients of all sizes, and gets.a feel for which pieces are worth their price tag. “Sometimes seeing the craftsmanship of an item in person makes me understand the investment it requires. Online I may wonder why these bird figurines are so pricey, but at Market I’m able to see that they’re actually quite large and heavy, so it makes sense,” Alfie explains.

Staying Educated and “In the Know”

One of the highlights of Alfie’s trip to High Point Market is the chance to immerse herself in master classes and educational sessions led by industry experts. These sessions offer valuable insights into a wide range of topics, from emerging design trends to practical considerations like short-term vacation rentals. By staying educated and “in the know,” we ensure that our design team is well-prepared to create beautiful spaces for our clients, no matter their style or preferences.

She also spends time talking to our sales reps, learning about the latest and greatest in their field. This year, she learned all about rug construction. Not an exciting topic for most of our clients, but you want your designer to be educated on these things! These educational conversations allow Alfie to select the perfect materials and models for our clients.

Finding Inspiration and Setting Trends

High Point Market is not only a place to learn—it’s also a source of inspiration and creativity for Alfie and our design team. From exploring cutting-edge designs to discovering playful pops of color, Market offers endless possibilities for sparking new ideas and setting trends. Alfie’s recent trip revealed a shift towards brighter, more vibrant hues, signaling a departure from the neutral color palettes that have dominated interior design in recent years. With this newfound inspiration, we’re excited to incorporate bold, colorful designs into our future projects and continue pushing the boundaries of design innovation.

Putting Knowledge into Practice

Armed with the knowledge and inspiration gained from High Point Market, Alfie and our design team are ready to put their findings into practice. Whether it’s selecting fabrics and artwork for current projects or exploring new possibilities for future designs, we’re committed to providing our clients with the highest level of expertise and creativity. From initial consultation to final installation, we’re dedicated to bringing our clients’ design dreams to life in spaces that are as beautiful as they are functional.

Bringing Your Home Dreams to Life

At Rowan Hall Interiors, we believe that great design is about more than just creating beautiful spaces—it’s about creating homes that reflect the unique personalities and lifestyles of our clients. By attending events like High Point Market, we ensure that our design team is equipped with the knowledge, inspiration, and expertise needed to turn your home dreams into reality. Whether you’re looking to refresh your space with a few key pieces or embark on a complete redesign, we’re here to help you every step of the way.

2023 in Review
Our interior design team's year of growth, fresh design, and fun travels

Every year brings new growth, new challenges, new friends, and for Rowan Hall Interiors, new homes that we get to make extraordinary! 2023 brought exciting wins and many fun projects that our growing team has loved bringing to life. From basement renovations and living room upgrades right here in Knoxville to Alfie’s adventures around the country, the Rowan Hall team did it all this year!

Wild, Wild West

Earlier this year, we wrapped up a basement renovation project with Preferred Construction. We’ve been calling it our Aspen Luxe project for its modern, western feel, inspired heavily by Alfie’s favorite places. This space might be in a Maryville basement, but these pieces would also thrive in an Aspen ski lodge or a cozy cabin in Montana. Knoxville interior designer, Alfie Rowan, custom living area and basement remodel with custom kitchen design, Farragut TN custom draperies and home renovation, interior finish selection

Read about how we designed this renovation with our friends at Preferred in part I of our project breakdown, and see the beautiful pieces and details filling the space in part II.

Alfie, of course, needed to take a ski trip or two to gather inspiration. She and Mitch hit the slopes several times in 2023–the making of a successful year for the Rowans! No one loves her job more than Alfie, but she is truly happiest on the slopes. It’s why she works so hard all summer and fall! Those winter months in Aspen are her happy place. Year in Color

Alfie’s 2023 travels also took her to High Point and Atlanta markets where she saw a major resurgence of color in the trend forecast. We’ve also seen Grandmillennial design make a major comeback, which is pretty thrilling when ruffles and tassel trim are your guilty pleasure.

One of our lovely clients desired a great room with a fresh take on the over-the-top grandmillennial style. Ruffles, bows, florals, and plaids are back! Alfie isn’t complaining, and she couldn’t wait to incorporate these fun elements into this project. While this traditional style is certainly current, it’s also timeless, and you can’t go wrong with a fresh take on the classics. We think girly, grandmillennial influences are here to stay, and we can’t wait to see how Rowan Hall gets to incorporate them in 2024.

With 2023’s revival of color, we saw a new rise in warm tones mixed in with the grays and blues of years’ past. A nice blend of warm and cool makes for the perfect cozy living area like the ones we created for this Knoxville family. Warm woods, neutrals, pops of blue and rust tones were the foundation for this design. These separate living spaces flow together, so cohesion was key, and we love how these spaces turned out. Stay tuned for an in-depth breakdown of this project on the blog soon!

RHI Takes NYC

Of course, it wouldn’t be a year-end recap without mentioning our IDS Designer of the Year award! Our colorful, eclectic family room addition built right here in Knoxville, Tennessee was awarded 1st runner up at the national IDS award gala in New York City. We were so honored to be included among some of the most talented designers in the country, and we’re so proud of our team. You can check out every detail of our award-winning design here.

Going and Growing

2023 was a year of growth for the Rowan Hall Interiors business. Our team grew with the addition of a marketing director and paint color consultant. Our leadership grew with our EOS business coach, and most importantly, our clientele grew! We met so many wonderful new clients this year, and we were honored to be welcomed into their lives to transform their homes.

From bathroom upgrades in Alfie’s very own neighborhood to great room updates for loyal clients, this year brought many happy workdays doing the job we love. Nearly 100 paint consultations kept our color consultants busy, and there were no shortage of furniture refreshes to fill our days.

On the Horizon

Our 2024 schedule is already booking up, but don’t worry! There’s still time for you to get the Rowan Hall team on board for your project. We’re looking forward to what the new year brings, including many fun projects we’re wrapping up and planning to begin. We’re in the early stages of a backyard poolside refresh and a Tellico Village custom home, and we’re wrapping up several bathroom and kitchen renovations throughout Knoxville.

If you missed Alfie’s adventures on Instagram, she took a trip to our clients’ new Florida farmhouse that we will be renovating in 2024. Our loyal clients have been big fans of Alfie’s for years, and they simply couldn’t move on without her! Her trip was fast, furious and a bit furry… Should make for several more interesting trips south!

Our future is full of custom furnishings, ski adventures for Alfie, more trending colors and styles, and hopefully, you! You may be deciding to stay put in your home for a few more years, and a home refresh will certainly make that more fun. Or, if you’re new to the Knoxville area, maybe you’re in need of a designer’s eye to help you get settled. We can’t wait to meet you and make you feel right at home. Holiday Highlights
Surviving the holiday season with a special offer from Rowan Hall Interiors

Santa is on his way, and the elves are working their magic, so you know what that means! The season is upon us, and the Rowan Hall elves are here to help our wonderful clients and readers master the Christmas spirit. Alfie and the team put their heads together to provide you with a masterclass for surviving the holiday hustle and bustle. Gift ideas, last-minute meals, “homemade” desserts, and Knoxville’s seasonal offerings–you’ll find it all in this blog, along with a special Rowan Hall offer for our readers!

For the Busy, Working Elves

Online shopping is easy and convenient, but there is something nostalgic about searching through a store until you find the perfect present for everyone on your list. Luckily, you can have it either way at Knoxville’s favorite gift shop! Fig and Company is Alfie’s go-to for crossing everyone off her list. We love their home accents, candles, and finishing touches that make a home feel special. Their storefront is the perfect stop when Alfie needs to bring a project to life with personalized details, and we love to support our friends by shopping local.

Straight from checkout to underneath the tree! Fig and Company is basically Santa’s workshop.

Fig and Company’s signature Tennessee Christmas candle

Their unique gifts have a touch of Knoxville, and they even have holiday gift bundles pre-made for everyone on your list. Their signature line of candles is hand-poured in Tennessee and offers the sweetest scents. You can’t get into the Christmas spirit until you’ve lit your first Tennessee Christmas candle of the season! Stop by their storefront or shop online, and don’t forget to let them know Alfie sent you!

For the Extra Thoughtful Elves

Sometimes the most difficult people to shop for are the ones who have it all. When another piece of jewelry or a new sweater doesn’t seem to suffice, a unique, personalized experience is the way to go. Give the gift of luxurious design with a Rowan Hall consultation certificate.

This certificate is good for one two-hour working meeting with principal designer, Alfie Rowan, in the client’s home. This personalized experience will provide your loved one with valuable direction and advice from a seasoned design professional.

If someone you know has been itching for a home refresh but doesn’t know where to begin, a meeting with Alfie will show them what’s possible and leave her with a roadmap for a successful design plan. Or, gift this consultation to your daughter who moved into her first home, and Alfie will help create furniture layouts and hone in on a design aesthetic. Better yet, send this over to your husband and we’ll let him know you’re dropping a hint. (Husbands, here is your hint.) It’s the perfect unique and thoughtful gift experience for the one you really want to impress. Gift a consultation now, and your loved one will be reaping the benefits for years to come!

For a limited time, we’re throwing in a special treat for you when you purchase a consultation gift certificate package. We’ve partnered with our friends at Fig and Company to include a $100 Fig and Company gift card with your purchase. Finish your shopping in one click! Purchase your consultation certificate by clicking the button below, and head to Fig and Company to cross off the rest of your list or pick up the finishing touches of holiday decor.

For the Culinary-Challenged Elves

We’re sharing a little secret… Alfie’s most valuable elves during the Christmas season are the ladies at Goodness to Go. These former lunch ladies know how to feed a crowd, and they do it well! Stop by to pick up a quick family dinner during the busiest time of year, or call on them to cater your parties and get-togethers. Their food is so delicious your guests won’t know you didn’t slave all day in the kitchen, but we won’t tell them if you don’t!

For more delicious Knoxville treats, VG’s Bakery has you covered. There’s no need to stress about breakfast on Christmas morning with their sweet rolls and muffins available for purchase! Check out their holiday menu here, and tell your family you’ll be in charge of dessert!

For the Hallmark Elves

It simply wouldn’t be Christmas in Knoxville without a trip downtown for ice skating and hot cocoa! Market Square transforms into a winter wonderland with a limited-time ice skating rink. You’ll feel like the main character in a Hallmark film as long as you don’t forget the warm beverage in hand. We love K-Brew’s tasty holiday treats, but we hear Cruze Farm’s hot chocolate can’t be beat!photo via https://www.threeriversrambler.com/christmastix

Another beloved Christmas tradition in Knoxville is the Three Rivers Rambler Christmas Lantern Express. Your little ones will think they are boarding the Polar Express, but if you leave them at home for a holiday date night, we won’t judge. Get your tickets here, and while you’re there, put in a good word for Alfie. We’re hoping she made the nice list this year!

From Rowan Hall to You

The best part of Rowan Hall Interiors is getting to turn our clients homes into something extraordinary all year long. We have the most amazing team that has worked diligently this month to ensure our clients get to experience the holiday magic again this year. Interior Furnishings

Curating the perfect blend of fabulous rugs, thoughtfully designed furniture and perfectly picked accessories is where Rowan Hall thrives. Have you ever purchased a piece, imagining it fitting perfectly in that one empty corner, only to get home and realize it’s entirely too small for the space? Or have you fallen in love with a piece of artwork, but later realize it doesn’t really belong anywhere in your home? That’s why you hire our Knoxville interior design team! We’re not only great at assembling a cohesive home full of pretty things. We’re also experts in scale–ensuring each piece fits your space to create a visually pleasing home.

We’re all about comfort, too! We’ve tested countless armchairs, sofas and sectionals during our trips to Market. We have over 75 trusted vendors, and we know which of their pieces you’ll want to sink into for movie night and which pieces are more suited for the pile of clothes that will inevitably end up there. Alfie has spent over 20 years researching the details of furniture design. You may not know if you want a 36” deep sofa or a 44” deep sofa, but she does! And she will prioritize your family feeling comfortable. At Rowan Hall, we love beautiful, luxurious pieces, but we also understand that your family may include children and furry friends, so we can design a home friendly for them as well. Effortless sophistication and everyday luxury is where we find our niche.

We love to incorporate the beautiful pieces that you’ve collected over the years. A fabulous rug, a sentimental piece of artwork and a treasured collection of books can find their place in your Rowan Hall design, creating a home that feels like yours (but better!) Hiring our full-service interior design firm means no one else in the world will have a home like yours. Big box stores can’t compete with the custom, curated rooms that will fill your home. Your beautifully designed rooms will be one of a kind!

Window Treatments

Valances, panels and pleats, oh my! The options are truly endless with custom window treatments, and they are necessary for elevating and completing any room. There are hundreds of options and decisions to make along the way. Do you need 1” or 3” rings? How far do your draperies need to hang off the wall? Do you want double or triple pleats, and how long do they need to be? Are you getting overwhelmed yet? custom draperies, hung by Knoxville interior design team at Rowan Hall Interiors, Farragut custom home designer, dining room by interior designers in knoxville tennessee

There is a massive difference between the look of store-bought curtain panels and custom-made window treatments. Paneled curtains are the go-to for most of our clients, but some windows require a valance, cornice, roman shade, etc. A window treatment can be a functional addition or simply a design element that completes a room. We have vendors for roman shades, blinds, and more functional design choices that make your home optimal for you. custom draperies with vintage pattern, hung by Knoxville interior design team at Rowan Hall Interiors, Farragut custom home designer, kitchen renovation by interior designers in knoxville tennessee
