Our interior design team's year of growth, fresh design, and fun travels

Every year brings new growth, new challenges, new friends, and for Rowan Hall Interiors, new homes that we get to make extraordinary! 2023 brought exciting wins and many fun projects that our growing team has loved bringing to life. From basement renovations and living room upgrades right here in Knoxville to Alfie’s adventures around the country, the Rowan Hall team did it all this year! 

Wild, Wild West

Earlier this year, we wrapped up a basement renovation project with Preferred Construction. We’ve been calling it our “Aspen Luxe” project for its modern, western feel, inspired heavily by Alfie’s favorite places. This space might be in a Maryville basement, but these pieces would also thrive in an Aspen ski lodge or a cozy cabin in Montana.

Alfie, of course, needed to take a ski trip or two to gather inspiration. She and Mitch hit the slopes several times in 2023–the making of a successful year for the Rowans! No one loves her job more than Alfie, but she is truly happiest on the slopes. It’s why she works so hard all summer and fall! Those winter months in Aspen are her happy place.

Year in Color

Alfie’s 2023 travels also took her to High Point and Atlanta markets where she saw a major resurgence of color in the trend forecast. We’ve also seen Grandmillennial design make a major comeback, which is pretty thrilling when ruffles and tassel trim are your guilty pleasure.

One of our lovely clients desired a great room with a fresh take on the over-the-top grandmillennial style. Ruffles, bows, florals, and plaids are back! Alfie isn’t complaining, and she couldn’t wait to incorporate these fun elements into this project. While this traditional style is certainly current, it’s also timeless, and you can’t go wrong with a fresh take on the classics. We think girly, grandmillennial influences are here to stay, and we can’t wait to see how Rowan Hall gets to incorporate them in 2024.

With 2023’s revival of color, we saw a new rise in warm tones mixed in with the grays and blues of years’ past. A nice blend of warm and cool makes for the perfect cozy living area like the ones we created for this Knoxville family. Warm woods, neutrals, pops of blue and rust tones were the foundation for this design. These separate living spaces flow together, so cohesion was key, and we love how these spaces turned out. RHI Takes NYC

Of course, it wouldn’t be a year-end recap without mentioning our IDS Designer of the Year award! Our colorful, eclectic family room addition built right here in Knoxville, Tennessee was awarded 1st runner up at the national IDS award gala in New York City. We were so honored to be included among some of the most talented designers in the country, and we’re so proud of our team. You can check out every detail of our award-winning design here.

Going and Growing

2023 was a year of growth for the Rowan Hall Interiors business. Our team grew with the addition of a marketing director and paint color consultant. Our leadership grew with our EOS business coach, and most importantly, our clientele grew! We met so many wonderful new clients this year, and we were honored to be welcomed into their lives to transform their homes. 

From bathroom upgrades in Alfie’s very own neighborhood to great room updates for loyal clients, this year brought many happy workdays doing the job we love. Nearly 100 paint consultations kept our color consultants busy, and there were no shortage of furniture refreshes to fill our days. 

On the Horizon

Our 2024 schedule is already booking up, but don’t worry! There’s still time for you to get the Rowan Hall team on board for your project. We’re looking forward to what the new year brings, including many fun projects we’re wrapping up and planning to begin. We’re in the early stages of a backyard poolside refresh and a Tellico Village custom home, and we’re wrapping up several bathroom and kitchen renovations throughout Knoxville.

If you missed Alfie’s adventures on Instagram, she took a trip to our clients’ new Florida farmhouse that we will be renovating in 2024. Our loyal clients have been big fans of Alfie’s for years, and they simply couldn’t move on without her! Her trip was fast, furious and a bit furry… Should make for several more interesting trips south!

Our future is full of custom furnishings, ski adventures for Alfie, more trending colors and styles, and hopefully, you! We’re sharing a little secret… Alfie’s most valuable elves during the Christmas season are the ladies at Goodness to Go. These former lunch ladies know how to feed a crowd, and they do it well! Another beloved Christmas tradition in Knoxville is the Three Rivers Rambler Christmas Lantern Express. Your little ones will think they are boarding the Polar Express, but if you leave them at home for a holiday date night, we won’t judge. Window Treatments

Valances, panels and pleats, oh my! The options are truly endless with custom window treatments, and they are necessary for elevating and completing any room. There are hundreds of options and decisions to make along the way. Do you need 1” or 3” rings? How far do your draperies need to hang off the wall? Do you want double or triple pleats, and how long do they need to be? Are you getting overwhelmed yet?

There is a massive difference between the look of store-bought curtain panels and custom-made window treatments. Paneled curtains are the go-to for most of our clients, but some windows require a valance, cornice, roman shade, etc. A window treatment can be a functional addition or simply a design element that completes a room. We have vendors for roman shades, blinds, and more functional design choices that make your home optimal for you.

We will always incorporate custom window treatments in our interior furnishing projects, but maybe your home is only missing that final touch. Meet Alfie
Introducing Rowan Hall's founder

Wife, mother, business owner, Knoxville interior designer–these are only a handful of the titles carried by Rowan Hall Interiors’ founder, Alfie Rowan. At a young age, she had a love for beautiful things and unique finds, and that passion has turned into a career and successful business. From selling antiques and home decor to running a full service interior design firm, she’s never lost her stylish eye and passion for selecting beautiful pieces that will bring any room to life. Today we’re introducing the woman who started it all and how she made Rowan Hall Interiors into what it is today. 

Balancing it All

While she feels most alive on the slopes of Colorado, Knoxville, Tennessee has always been home to Alfie. Growing up in the Rocky Hill area and graduating from the University of Tennessee, her home in Farragut is where she loves to be, always bringing home inspiration from her travels. While she always had an affinity for beautiful, well-designed homes, she didn’t lean into that love until later in life. She was on a pre-med track in college, graduated with a degree in biology, and married her Husband, Mitch, all before having two boys and fully leaning into motherhood. Her career as a business woman and interior designer began as a hobby she could foster as she took care of her kids. Today, it’s a full time job for her and her team. 

Rowan Hall Interiors began more than 20 years ago as a shop in Southern Market where Alfie and her long-time best friend sold home decor, antiques and other unique finds. As her kids became more independent, Alfie was able to dedicate more time growing this business she loved. There was a desire from her loyal customers to hire her for interior design work, so she began taking on one or two small jobs at a time, and her business grew steadily from there.

An Eye for Design

Alfie’s natural talent grew through her studies, but for the most part, putting her abilities to practice is where the interior designer we know today came to life. She attributes her keen eye to genetics. Her aunt was a talented interior designer who was self-taught and began her own business at 40, and she spent many days surrounded by beautiful things with her antique arts dealer grandmother. She supposes that while some have a knack for numbers or computers, she thrives in selecting beautiful pieces to bring out a room’s full potential.

While her eye for style can’t be taught, her decades of knowledge did not come without lots of hard work and dedication to be constantly learning. Going to market, meeting with industry professionals and never being afraid to ask questions have made her the knowledgeable interior designer she is today. She insists that she learns something new every day, and she doesn’t think she will ever stop learning. Whether she is inquiring about Parisian versus Turkish rugs when meeting with her rug dealer, spending time with her interior design friends at Market, or taking a master class on short-term vacation rentals, Alfie is committed to expanding her expertise to bring her clients the best of the best. 

Her favorite part about working with our wonderful clients is adapting to styles that will make them feel comfortable in their home. While Rowan Hall certainly has a signature look, a truly talented designer like Alfie can take any clients’ desires and personal style and make a beautiful space out of that. In general, Alfie’s design preference is fairly transitional in style. She loves traditional elements and antique pieces, but prefers the comfort and practicality of more modern design. Transitional design lends itself well to that, but you will typically find fun elements that make a space stand out. Whether it’s a unique piece of art or a bold light fixture, Alfie loves to select pieces that make our clients light up when they walk into a room. 

While her perfect day would be spent on the slopes with her husband, Mitch, and sons, Austin and Jackson, Alfie has spent the last two decades building Rowan Hall, so she can spend her days doing what she loves. She feels blessed to have a job that allows her to be creative, bringing beautiful spaces to clients she loves. She brings her personality, design expertise and decades of business experience to every job.
