Trendspotting at High Point Market 2024
Top Trends as Seen by Alfie Rowan

Part of being a professional interior design firm is keeping up with the latest and greatest in design. From new trends to new inspiration, it’s important for our Knoxville interior designers to stay on the cutting edge of what’s new and noteworthy.

Each year, lead designer Alfie Rowan has the opportunity to attend High Point Market, the nation’s largest interior design trade show. High Point, North Carolina is just a hop and a skip away from our interior design firm in Knoxville, Tennessee, so we hardly miss this annual event.

At High Point, Alfie discovers a treasure trove of innovative ideas and cutting-edge designs that are set to redefine the world of interior design in the next year. From luxurious materials to bold color palettes and timeless design aesthetics, Alfie loves to soak up every bit and bring her new knowledge home to her clients.

There are countless reasons why Alfie goes to Market each year, but perhaps the most fun reason is seeing the emerging trends. This year, there were a plethora of noteworthy things to see. Today, we’re sharing the top trends that Alfie noticed at this year’s event.

Burl Wood: Embracing Natural Elegance

One trend that caught Alfie’s eye in mass abundance at High Point Market was the resurgence of burl wood in furniture and decor. Known for its rich, swirling patterns and organic beauty, burl wood adds a touch of natural elegance to any space. From coffee tables and sideboards to accent chairs and decorative accessories, furniture designers are incorporating burl wood into their creations to bring warmth and character to interiors.

At every turn, Alfie spotted Burl Wood in varying shades and shapes. The rich texture of these pieces automatically brings an air of luxury to a space, and the finish is really very versatile. Dark burl wood brings moodiness and depth, while the lighter, warm burl wood can have a retro or coastal feel. Overall, the gray wood from Market’s past is making way for warmer wood tones that feel fresh and updated.

What do you think of the resurgence of burl wood? By the end of the week, Alfie was ready to bring each piece home with her! If you’re as into the trend as she is, give us a call!

Pops of Purple: Infusing Vibrancy and Sophistication

As predicted by Sherwin Williams’ color of the year, the design world is purple obsessed! Earth tones are still having their moment, but pops of this regal hue are being incorporated to add vibrancy and sophistication.

Alfie saw this unexpected accent color in upholstery, throw pillows, artwork, rugs, and more. The addition of purple shades was noteworthy and a diversion from what we’ve seen in the past. Deep, rich purples and soft pastels alike are making bold statements in design. We’re kind of loving the sense of luxury and refinement these shades add to a space! If you’re looking to add a fresh flair to your home, maybe pops of purple are just what you need. Contact our team today, and we’ll help you decide.

Shades of Green: Bringing the Outdoors In

To Alfie’s delight, green continues to reign supreme as a dominant color trend in interior design. She noticed a variety of shades on display at High Point Market, from soft sage and muted olive to vibrant emerald and deep forest green. Designers are embracing the versatility of this soothing hue to bring the tranquility of nature indoors.

Whether used in upholstery, wallpaper, or decor accents, green creates a sense of balance and harmony in any space, making it a timeless choice for modern interiors. Deep green upholstery is always a staple in design, but we love to see fresh takes on a classic. Pretty sage tones are hot right now, sometimes acting as a neutral and other times bringing an earthy pop. We always love to see what’s new with Thibaut, and this year’s feminine, pastel display did not disappoint. The soft shades, traditional silhouettes, and formal layout create the most beautiful space.

Maximalism/Traditional Design: Celebrating Opulence and Grandeur

While minimalism has long been a dominant trend in interior design, Alfie observed a shift towards maximalism and traditional design aesthetics at this year’s High Point Market. From ornate furniture pieces and intricate detailing to rich textures and lavish finishes, designers are embracing opulence and grandeur in their creations. Bold patterns, luxurious fabrics, and statement accessories are all key elements of this trend, creating spaces that exude elegance and sophistication.

Alfie was taken by the abundance of chaise lounges which evidenced this shift in styles.”There were chaise lounges everywhere! Big ones, small ones, modern ones, classic ones,” Alfie reflected. They aren’t usually so prevalent, so this was noteworthy. The chaise lounge isn’t always the most versatile or practical piece, but rather a luxurious addition we see throughout history. This shows how the design world is taking a more formal approach to modern design.

Inspiring Design Trends for 2024

From the natural elegance of burl wood to the vibrant sophistication of pops of purple, the top trends spotted by Alfie Rowan at High Point Market offer a wealth of inspiration for homeowners and designers alike. April Showers Bring May Flowers
Alfie's Floral Wallpaper Favorites

As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers,” and at Rowan Hall Interiors, we’re ready to welcome the blooming season with open arms and vibrant walls. Our owner, Alfie Rowan, has a special fondness for wallpapers, especially those adorned with enchanting florals and charming birds hidden within the intricate patterns. Today, we’ll explore some of our favorite floral wallpapers that add a touch of nature’s beauty to our designs.

Zen Vibrance

“Pagoda Trees” in lavender and blue from Thibaut

If you didn’t know from our latest reel, Alfie loves any excuse to incorporate a chinoiserie pattern in her designs–if only so she can say the word a hundred times! Hidden pagodas and birds run through this bold pattern. It may be loud for a wallpaper, but we’re not against it! This pattern would also make a gorgeous pillow or a fabulous drapery statement.

For Alfie, a wallpaper isn’t complete without a subtle avian presence (in case you hadn’t noticed). This choice seamlessly integrates elegant birds within a tapestry of blooming flowers, creating a harmonious blend of sophistication and nature. The Asian influences of pagodas and zen garden florals make this whimsical chinoiserie the perfect choice in an eclectic home.

Asian Elegance

“Asian Scenic” in purple and blue from Thibaut

For something with a similar style but more subtle color palette, we would opt for something like this from Thibaut. Our bold powder room renovation from our IDS award-winning project is the perfect showing for this beautiful pattern. We paired it with a vibrant blue vanity and brass accents for a small-but-mighty bathroom!

This wallpaper is a more detailed Zen garden landscape with flowing water, pagodas, people and lush trees. Technically it’s not a floral pattern, so it plays a bit less feminine, especially in some of the other colorways. We just happen to prefer a bright showing of blue, purple and green!

Whimsical Garden Symphony

“Rosalind” in blush from Thibaut

This toile illustration pattern is a more subdued way to bring florals into your home, especially if you fancy a bit of a vintage vibe. This one pictured brings a feminine touch with a beautiful blush colorway that brings in a nice neutral taupe and shades of blue/green. Each of the other colorways brings a completely different feel, showing how versatile this pattern can be.

The enchanting wallpaper brings a whimsical garden to life with a combination of blossoms and delicate birds. Alfie’s appreciation for those details shines in this choice, where each petal and feather tells a story of nature’s elegance.

Serene Meadow Retreat

“Wild Flower” in beige from Thibaut

For an even more subdued floral, we may opt for something like this Wild Flower pattern. The neutral options are more universal with a touch of botanical femininity. This one in particular has a sisal finish, giving a touch of texture that would make any space feel effortlessly organic.

We would use this wallpaper to transform any space into a serene meadow retreat that captures the essence of a peaceful flower-filled landscape. Alfie adores the calming effect these floral patterns bring to bedrooms and reading nooks. The subtlety of this choice could be used in a variety of designs and locations, which makes it a winner in our book!

Nature’s Tapestry

“Indienne Jacobean” in green from Thibaut

If there’s one thing Alfie loves, it’s a large-scale floral. This one is beautiful in every colorway, but you know we are drawn to those greens and blues. This one pictured is reminiscent of many of the color trends Alfie saw at Market this year. She saw pops of purple and soft pinks trending, cool greens, and hints of yellow, which are each incorporated into this pattern.

Nature’s intricate tapestry unfolds in this wallpaper, showcasing a rich blend of flowers and foliage. This Jacobean print is a picture of timelessness, as this style originated in the early 17th century and is still impactful today. These modern hues mixed with a vintage floral make for an eternally classic pattern.

Secret Garden Blossoms

“Meadow” in blush from Thibaut

Another large-scale floral with a secret garden feel is adorned by blossoms in various stages of bloom. Alfie gasped over this fabric in our most recent Thibaut unboxing video on Instagram, and she gushed over the color combinations and inclusion of neutrals throughout the pattern.

The blush colorway has neutrals ranging from light taupes to deep browns, which means this wallpaper would play nicely with a wide range of others. The sage colorway is a versatile dream. Shades of cream, taupe, brown and black make this the perfect floral to tie together an entire room. Needless to say, this new arrival will soon be seen in a Rowan Hall design!

Petal Poetry

“Laura” in lavender and green from Thibaut

Alfie’s love for floral wallpapers extends far and wide, and this choice is one of her newer favorites. We recently displayed this pattern at the Knoxville Home Show with McLain’s Painting. They were showing off their new wallpaper installation service, which makes us pretty giddy at Rowan Hall! In addition to our typical paint consultations we do with McLain’s painting customers, we now offer a wallpaper consultation!

This pattern displayed beautifully. We adore the mix of tulips and hydrangeas, and this colorway is a bright, vibrant take on classic colors. Blues and greens can be really timeless, and this brighter look is a fun way to dress up a space.

Where Wallpaper Meets Artistry

Alfie’s passion for floral prints and patterns goes far beyond wallpaper. She’s impartial when it comes to botanicals! Throw pillows, window treatments, artwork, furnishings… The possibilities are endless! Each thoughtfully designed piece is a reflection of our dedication to creating interiors that not only please the eye but also tells stories of natural beauty and hidden wonders.

Designing a Timeless Legacy
Rowan Hall's Guide to Sustainable Interior Design

In a world of fast fashion, ever-evolving trends and shopping at our fingertips, the concept of sustainability requires intentionality and commitment. Sustainability is more than recycling and paper straws. It’s investing in future generations and forgoing instant gratification for lasting benefits.

At Rowan Hall Interiors, our dedication to sustainable interior design practices goes beyond the eco-friendly; it extends to creating designs that withstand the test of time both aesthetically and functionally. In honor of Earth Day, we’re sharing ways we, as interior designers in beautiful East Tennessee, prioritize sustainability in each and every thoughtfully designed home.

Quality Over Quantity

At Rowan Hall, we advocate for the timeless beauty found in quality pieces. We guide our clients to invest in interior furnishings that not only align with their personal style but also promise longevity. Our curated selection focuses on pieces that stand the test of time both in terms of aesthetics and practical durability.

We all have that antique table or heirloom piece of artwork that has been in our family for generations. We have furniture designers and artists from decades past to thank for that! These pieces have stood the test of time thanks to quality craftsmanship and thoughtful care that went into creating them. There is a vast difference between furnishings that have been around for a hundred years and the ones that come in a box, requiring marriage boot camp to be assembled.

While we understand the ease and affordability of these quick solutions, our Knoxville interior design business is founded on creating extraordinary homes. This means curating collections of quality pieces that will last for generations throughout the endless trends that come and go.

A Refreshing Approach

Another key to sustainable interior design is recognizing the value of a home refresh. At Rowan Hall, we cherish the beauty in reuse. By rearranging and repurposing furniture and decor items, we breathe new life into cherished pieces, allowing them to shine in different areas of the home.

After over 20 years of business, many of our Knoxville interior design clients have become repeat customers. Every few years, it’s nice to refresh a space as tastes and lifestyles change. Because we thoughtfully designed pieces and curated a collection unique to our clients, a major change doesn’t require much. If you’ve ever had the urge to rearrange your entire home, you need to have our interior designers on speed dial!

When clients crave a fresh and new feel without discarding beloved pieces, we step in. By strategically incorporating a few new elements and rearranging existing treasures, we create a harmonious transformation that respects both sentiment and sustainability. With a new piece of artwork, updated accessories, and perhaps a new rug or fresh custom window treatments, our Knoxville interior design team will have your home feeling brand new in no time!

We understand the environmental impact of the design industry. By encouraging the reuse of existing items, we actively contribute to reducing waste. Our team takes pride in creating spaces that reflect our clients’ evolving styles without compromising the beauty of their collected treasures.

Designing a Timeless Legacy

At Rowan Hall Interiors, our commitment to sustainability extends beyond design—it’s about nurturing a timeless connection between our clients and their spaces. By curating designs that evolve gracefully, we contribute to homes that tell stories, reflect growth, and remain eternally enduring.

In our business, sustainable interior design is not just a practice; it’s a philosophy. At Rowan Hall Interiors, we invite you to embrace a design journey that not only reflects your style but also stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of sustainable living. Together, let’s create spaces that transcend trends, becoming timeless reflections of your unique story.

Whether you’re brand new to the Knoxville, Tennessee area or you’re familiar with every interior designer in town, if sustainability and timeless design is important to you, the Rowan Hall business model is made for you. Timeless Elegance
Navigating Interior Design Trends in 2024

As we step into 2024, the world of interior design is evolving, bidding adieu to some trends that have had their moment in the spotlight. At Rowan Hall Interiors, we believe in creating spaces that stand the test of time. Our approach centers on establishing a classic and timeless foundation, allowing for the infusion of trendy elements in areas that can gracefully transition with evolving styles.

With Alfie gearing up for High Point Market this week, let’s explore the 2024 interior design trends that are making way for the enduring allure of timeless elegance.

Out with the Old: Interior Trends Taking a Backseat

1. Overly Industrial Vibes

The overall theme of shifting trends is towards warmth and comfort and away from anything that feels cold and sterile. Therefore, the starkness of industrial design is softening its presence in 2024.

While exposed brick and metal accents have been popular, we’re witnessing a shift towards warmer textures and more inviting materials. Industrial design still has its place, but you might notice a warmth to the design choices that make a huge difference.

While we enjoyed the cool, modern feel of the industrial aesthetic, the Rowan Hall crew loves to make a space feel cozy. Our Knoxville interior design team is excited to embrace a change!

2. Monochromatic Everything

Similarly, the era of strictly monochromatic spaces is gently fading. Though we love a cohesive space, everything doesn’t need to be too matchy-matchy. In our opinion, this was less of a trend and more of a design faux pas! Often, DIY designers build a space around a certain shade and it ends up looking one-dimensional and poorly designed.

Coordinated variety creates more stimulating, effortless looking spaces where nothing introduced in the everyday shuffle of living, such as kids’ toys or textbooks, sticks out like a sore thumb. Embracing a broader color palette also allows for more creativity and personalization. Rowan Hall Interiors encourages clients to explore hues that resonate with their individual style, creating spaces that feel uniquely theirs.

If you’re struggling to find a palette and design style that works for your home, maybe it’s time to call in the professionals! Our Knoxville interior designers can help take your home to the next level.

3. Fast Furniture

In our opinion as professional interior designers, we say it’s always a good idea to invest in pieces that will last through the decades. Disposable furniture that prioritizes trends over durability is seeing a decline, and the Rowan Hall team isn’t mad about that! Not only are pieces that end up decorating landfills detrimental to the environment, they end up costing more to replace over time than better made alternatives. Buy nice or buy twice, as we say! At Rowan Hall, we champion the idea of investing in quality, timeless pieces that not only withstand the test of time but also contribute to sustainable living.

4. Statement Walls

While accent walls had their moment, the trend of creating bold, standalone statements on walls is making way for more holistic approaches to color and texture. We guide our clients towards timeless wall treatments that complement the overall design. We love wallpaper, molding details, and bold paint colors as much as any interior designer. However, we appreciate these accents in a cohesive way that doesn’t break up a design for a clunky statement.

5. Minimalism to the Extreme

Maximalism is back! The extreme minimalist trend is softening, making room for a more curated and meaningful approach to decor. At Rowan Hall, we believe in decluttering while preserving personal touches that add character and warmth to a space. As lovers of fabulous custom window treatments, bold wallpaper, and all the little decor accents that make a space feel homey, we’re definitely ready to embrace this shifting trend!

The Rowan Hall Approach: Crafting Timeless Foundations

At Rowan Hall Interiors, our commitment to timeless elegance is unwavering. We understand that while trends come and go, a classic foundation ensures your space remains relevant and captivating for years to come. Our interior designers prioritize pieces that will stand the test of time as trends change.

1. Classic Palette as the Canvas

When our East Tennessee interior design clients want color but are afraid to take the leap, we like to ease them in with a neutral base. We start with a classic palette that forms the canvas of your home. Neutral tones and timeless color schemes create a backdrop that effortlessly adapts to evolving design sensibilities.

Then, accents like window treatments, throw pillows, artwork and accessories bring the punch. These things can be easily transitioned throughout seasons and years as our clients’ desires change. Luckily, we always pick up the phone when our previous clients call and love working with them again!

2. Quality Over Quantity

Our emphasis on quality over quantity extends to furnishings. We guide our clients towards investments in pieces that not only reflect their personal style but also promise longevity, becoming cherished elements of their homes.

At Rowan Hall, we value relationships with our clients and desire to get to know their lifestyles before designing anything for their homes. This way, we can understand what pieces are worth the investment. We factor kids, pets, habits and so much more into how we design their spaces.

3. Transitional AccessoriesKnoxville interior designer, Alfie Rowan, custom living area and basement remodel with custom kitchen design, Farragut TN custom draperies and home renovation, interior finish selection

Of course, we’re not opposed to the occasional design trend. We go to Market to find out the direction of design and what “the new thing” will be each season. Sometimes it’s fun to incorporate fresh pieces that make a space feel current.

Recognizing the evolving nature of design trends, we strategically incorporate trendy accessories in areas that can be easily updated. This ensures your space stays fresh without requiring a complete overhaul.

4. Personalized Touchescustom designed bedroom, by Knoxville interior design team at Rowan Hall Interiors, custom window treatments with complimentary custom upholstered pillows and bedding, matchings lamps and nightstands frame custom headboard, Interior designers in knoxville Tennessee

While trends may be in one day and out the next, personal touches endure. We work closely with our clients to understand their unique preferences, infusing spaces with elements that resonate with their individual stories. Styles may come and go, but a space that reflects your unique taste will always feel like you!

We love to bring our clients’ personalities to a space, which is why it’s so important that we get to know you! Whether it’s a teenage girl’s bedroom that will be her safe haven or the fun family room where everyone will gather, we want our clients to feel like their home is their own.

5. Sustainable Design

Rowan Hall is committed to sustainable design practices. We believe in creating spaces that not only stand the test of time aesthetically but also contribute to a sustainable and environmentally conscious future. We support small and local businesses and encourage our clients to invest in timeless pieces that are well made by companies we trust. We fill our clients’ homes with a million puzzle pieces that we know will withstand every bit of life that will be lived within their four walls.

This year, let Rowan Hall Interiors guide you in creating a home that transcends trends, embodying the enduring charm of timeless elegance. Your space is not just a reflection of current styles; it’s a testament to your style—timeless, classic, and uniquely yours.

We would love to get to know your style and how Rowan Hall’s talented interior designers can help make your home even more special. Give us a call or book an initial consultation to get the design party started!
