Ceiling to Floor, and So Much More
How We Transformed a Kitchen into a Dream

You may not feel like you’re walking into a dream every time you step into your kitchen without knowing exactly why. Often, it’s not one big issue. It’s a handful of small details that aren’t quite working together. That’s where we come in. At Rowan Hall Interiors, we specialize in identifying what’s holding a space back and creating a plan to bring it into alignment with how you really want to live.

For this Rocky Hill family, the kitchen wasn’t meeting their needs or reflecting their style. Between the textured ceilings, dated flooring, and a layout that boxed everything in, it was clear this space needed a fresh start.

BEFORE
AFTER

From Disjointed to Dreamy

As with every Rowan Hall project, we began with a welcome packet and consultation to understand the family’s needs and goals. One of the first things we addressed was the flooring. The downstairs had a mix of carpet and tile that visually chopped up the space. We replaced everything with warm, wide-plank hardwoods to create a sense of flow, continuity, and quiet luxury throughout the main level.

The floors alone made a dramatic difference, but the layout was still working against the space. A partial wall separated the kitchen from the breakfast nook, blocking both light and connection. That wall came down, and with it, the kitchen opened up beautifully.

BEFORE
AFTER

A New Way to Live in the Space

With the floor plan opened up, we turned our attention to the details. A tiny, shallow closet near the kitchen wasn’t serving much purpose, so we reimagined it into a custom bar area with matching cabinetry, a polished quartz counter, and a tile backsplash that echoed the main kitchen design. Seeded glass doors add a charming, collected look and provide a place to display glassware or favorite bar pieces.

Throughout the full-service design phase, our team created detailed floor plans, elevations, and a curated presentation of samples. The clients were able to see the entire concept before anything was ordered. We handled every detail of the design development so they could move forward with confidence and clarity.

Soft Finishes and Clean Lines

The new design palette focused on softness and sophistication. We selected warm greige cabinetry to create a timeless foundation, paired with creamy quartz countertops and matte black hardware for a clean, grounded look. The elongated hex backsplash tile brings subtle texture and light reflection, offering just enough detail without overwhelming the room.

The newly expanded island now serves as the heart of the kitchen. With room to seat four and plenty of prep space, it invites both connection and functionality. The island feels tailored, not trendy, and suits everything from morning coffee to entertaining friends.

Elevating the Everyday

Beyond the kitchen, the home needed a few extra touches to complete the transformation. We smoothed out the textured ceilings throughout the main floor and updated the front entry with a new black door and refined light fixture. These changes may seem small, but they created a cohesive look that feels intentional from the moment you walk through the door.

While the clients focused on their day-to-day life, our team took care of the rest. From ordering products to coordinating timelines and managing vendor communication, we kept the project on track and handled all the logistics. Our builder partners appreciated having clear specs and well-organized information, and the homeowners appreciated not having to worry about the details.

The Finishing Touch

Once the construction was complete and every product had arrived safely in our climate-controlled staging area, it was time for the installation. We styled every surface and made sure the kitchen was not only complete but polished to perfection.

The homeowners returned to a space that looked and felt entirely new. The reactions were everything we hoped for.

“Alfie,” said the lady of the house, “you made my dreams come true!” “Welcome home” moments like these are why we do what we do!

The Future Looks Bright!
2025 Color Trends We’re Loving

Make room, Millennial Gray—there’s a whole new palette ready to play! It’s time to share the spotlight.

At Rowan Hall Interiors, a full-service Knoxville interior design firm based in Farragut, we’re welcoming 2025 with open arms and wide-open paint decks, because color is back in a big way. From rich jewel tones to reimagined rusts to the joyful burst of vibrant lilac, this year’s design landscape is drenched in bold, expressive hues—and we mean that literally.

Let’s explore the color trends we’re most excited about, how we’re already using them in Knoxville and surrounding counties, and why color drenching might just be your new favorite thing.

Gray Area: Why We’re Not Breaking Up—Just Seeing Other Colors

Let’s set the record straight: we never fell out of love with gray. We just realized it doesn’t have to be the only color we commit to.

There was a time when gray was the go-to—fresh, polished, and endlessly versatile. And truth be told? It still is. Gray can be timeless, grounding, and effortlessly chic when used with intention. At Rowan Hall, we still reach for a soft greige or a moody charcoal when the space calls for it. In the right setting, gray doesn’t just work—it shines.

But when the world hit pause in 2020, something shifted. With all that extra time at home, our our Knoxville interior design clients started to tune into how their spaces made them feel. And for some, all-gray everything began to feel a little…flat. The result? A craving for warmth, depth, and a touch more personality.

We started seeing clients light up over bold wallpapers, richly colored upholstery, and cabinetry painted in hues that felt distinctly them. Even during gray’s reign as design’s darling, it wasn’t a cure-all—because let’s be honest, no color is. (If only it were that easy!) That’s exactly why great design matters. It’s not just about picking pretty shades—it’s about finding your perfect fit.

At Rowan Hall Interiors, we believe there’s still plenty of room for gray—it’s just not the automatic answer anymore. Our job is to help you strike the right balance between classic and current. Whether that means layering in warm tones to soften a cool backdrop or letting a deep graphite moment make a statement, we make sure every choice feels intentional—and beautifully you.

So no, gray isn’t over. It’s just evolved. And we’re here for every shade of it.

Rust Revival: Earthy but Elevated

Rust is having a major moment—but this isn’t your 1970s shag carpet situation. Today’s rusts are richer, moodier, and far more refined—think burnished terracotta, spiced cinnamon, and desert clay.

These warm, earthy tones bring instant depth and dimension, especially when paired with materials like stone, brass, or olive green.

For a modern update, rust has traded out its old partner avocado (we don’t miss it—sorry, not sorry!) for deep indigos and sapphire blues. The result is less “desert adobe” and more “art collector’s townhouse.”

Our Color Specialist, Sylvia, puts it best:

“For just a hint of rust that’s less earthy and more sophisticated, we’re seeing it paired with cool jewel tones—especially blues—and loving it!”

We love using rust in:

  • Velvet accent chairs and ottomans
  • Layered textiles like throws, drapes, and area rugs
  • Art, ceramics, and accent pieces that warm up a space without overwhelming it

Bonus: Rust bridges the gap between old-world charm and modern edge, making it a transitional superstar—just like us.

Jewel Tones: Drama in the Best Way

Nothing says intentional luxury like a moody emerald or a saturated sapphire. Jewel tones are unapologetically rich, adding drama and depth in just the right doses—but the way we’re using them in 2025 feels fresher than ever.

Sylvia explains it perfectly:

“Classic jewel tones always seem to circle Art Deco motifs—stunning when done right, but very Great Gatsby costume party when done wrong! We’re used to seeing them play out in geometric patterns or paired with yellow gold and bright silver metallics—but that often feels heavy and overbearing, like we’re putting on airs.

2025 jewel tones have been recontextualized to feel less formal. I’m seeing them in florals and organic shapes for the first time. We’re really considering other methods of presentation to enjoy the richness of the color free from the context of the old ways the palette was styled.”

This new take is just right for the Rowan Hall aesthetic—livable luxury that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Our transitional design style, a favorite among our Farragut interior design clients, aligns perfectly with these modern reimaginings of bejeweled palettes.

We recommend jewel tones for:

  • Dining rooms (they deserve to be unforgettable)
  • Libraries and home offices
  • Ceilings! (Yes, really—don’t forget the fifth wall)

By pairing them with natural materials, curved silhouettes, and softer finishes, jewel tones feel elevated and approachable.

Lilac’s Bright, Bold Moment

You heard it here first: Lilac is the new blush—and it’s bringing the energy.

Gone are the shy, barely-there lilacs of the past. In 2025, lilac is vivid, youthful, and full of life. It’s showing up everywhere—from textiles to cabinetry—with a personality that’s impossible to ignore.

We’re especially seeing lilac:

  • Pulling forest green and olive accents through botanical prints
  • Accented with chartreuse or yellow for bold, high-contrast combos
  • Used in vibrant upholstery, wallpaper, and painted millwork

Mauve, by contrast, is lilac’s more versatile cousin—a quieter, muted variation for those craving subtlety. But if you’re ready to make a statement? Lilac is the way to go.

Sylvia is loving the shift.

“We saw lilac—along with its shier cousin, mauve—and a high-risk, high-reward partner like chartreuse in Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 Color Capsule. Now those predictions are coming true before our eyes in the new textiles arriving at the office!”

Lilac is vibrant, joyful, and unapologetically fun—exactly the kind of energy we’re channeling into 2025.

What’s Color Drenching—and Why We’re Obsessed

Of all the trends we’re loving for 2025, color drenching might be our favorite.

The concept? Take one color (or a tonal family) and apply it floor-to-ceiling—walls, trim, ceiling, cabinetry. The result? A cocoon-like space that feels immersive, dramatic, and oh-so intentional.

We love it for:

  • Home offices (hello, deep focus)
  • Powder rooms (tiny but mighty!)
  • Bedrooms (cue the cozy, spa-like vibes)

Our Knoxville interior designers are seeing color drenching more and more in client requests—and we’re here for it. Whether it’s a moody blue study or a soft clay bedroom, the effect is always luxe and tailored. If you’re new to the idea, start with a muted hue like sage, mauve, or warm earth tones. From there, layer in wood, metal, and texture to build depth and dimension.

Pro tip: Paint the trim and ceiling, too. That’s what makes it magic.

In Summary: Your Home Deserves More Color

Not sure where to start? That’s where we come in.

From Farragut to Florida
A Dining Room Revival

One of the most rewarding aspects of being luxury interior designers in Knoxville, Tennessee, is the opportunity to work on diverse projects. Sometimes this includes vacation homes, and when we’re lucky, these homes are in fabulous, warm places that we get to visit in the dead of East Tennessee winter. We had the pleasure of revitalizing a Tampa vacation home for one of our long-time Knoxville clients. Earlier on the blog, we gave an overview of the transformation, but today, we’re breaking down one fabulous room.

The dining room was as outdated and uninspiring as the rest of the home’s design, and the dark colors did not make this space feel like a beachy getaway. Our clients desired a bright, modern vacation home that would feel like their very own luxurious vacation. This dining room transformation is a testament to how we bring our Rowan Hall touch to every space we design, from Farragut to Florida.

The Initial Challengetampa vacation home dining room before, rowan hall interiors, interior designers knoxville tn

Our clients, who love contemporary and bold designs, had purchased a Tampa vacation home that was decorated in a very traditional style. The dining room, in particular, felt outdated and didn’t reflect their modern aesthetic. Before they even finalized the purchase, they sent us photos from the real estate listing and asked if we could update the space to match their style. We were excited to take on the challenge and knew we could make it work.

As with all our out-of-state projects, we began with a trade day. Alfie flew down to Tampa to take measurements of the space and assess the existing elements. Our Knoxville interior design team then had numerous discussions with the clients to understand their vision and preferences. We decided to keep the dining room’s structure intact but focused on aesthetic changes to brighten and modernize the space.

Creating the Flow

tampa vacation home dining room progress, rowan hall interiors, interior designers knoxville tnWe started by deciding to open up the niche to create an opening into the eat-in kitchen. This created better flow throughout the home, making the dining room feel more connected and spacious. We painted the walls a light neutral color and the ceilings white to give the illusion of higher ceilings. This simple change instantly made the room feel more open and airy.

Given that we chose to utilize the eat-in kitchen as more of a sitting room, the dining room needed to have plenty of seating for dining. We opted for a round pedestal table to maintain easy walking space and keep the flow of the home intact. The furnishings we selected are modern with a slight retro flare. The fluted and gold base of the dining table makes this piece contemporary and timeless at the same time.

A Fresh Look

dining room custom designed by Knoxville interior design team at Rowan Hall Interiors, Interior designers in knoxville TennesseeThe dining room’s traditional elements, like the dark wood furniture and heavy chandelier, were replaced with sleek, modern pieces. The before photos show a room dominated by warm, dark tones and ornate decor. We introduced a fresh, neutral color palette, opting for light walls and contemporary furnishings that made the space feel airy and inviting.

A stunning modern chandelier became the focal point of the dining room, replacing the old, ornate fixture. We also added contemporary artwork, a vibrant rug, and chic accessories to bring in color, while keeping the furnishings neutral. These pieces of furniture can work in any home these clients move into, and we can help them keep them fresh by changing up the other pieces in the room.dining room custom designed by Knoxville interior design team at Rowan Hall Interiors, Interior designers in knoxville Tennessee

The transformation of this dining room is nothing short of spectacular. The once dark and dated space now feels fresh, bright, and modern. Elevating to Excellence
A Living and Dining Room Transformation by Rowan Hall Interiors

Views of Norris Lake from our clients’ back porch

Relocating to a new home is more than just changing your address; it’s about creating a space that mirrors your new chapter. Our recent project for a couple moving from the Midwest to their picturesque home on Norris Lake, East Tennessee, exemplifies this beautifully. With breathtaking lake views and an array of large windows, their new home deserved furnishings that complemented its grandeur. Rowan Hall Interiors took on the challenge of crafting a luxurious and timeless living and dining space that honors the serenity and beauty of their lakeside haven.

The Vision

Entryway AFTER

Our clients, a retired couple ready to enjoy the next chapter of their lives, were captivated by their new home’s classic style infused with rustic elements and modern finishes. The expansive windows frame stunning lake views, calling for interior spaces that felt equally open, light, and inviting. Their existing furnishings, however, fell short – outdated and undersized, they didn’t do justice to the grandeur of their new home. They desired light, airy pieces that would stand the test of time, merging functionality with elegance, without the worry of accommodating children or pets.

Why Rowan Hall Interiors?

Choosing Rowan Hall Interiors for this transformation was a step towards a seamless, luxurious experience. Our clients were looking for more than just new furniture; they wanted a comprehensive, stress-free process where their vision would be brought to life with precision and care. While luxury was at the forefront, practicality wasn’t overlooked. The furnishings selected were robust and enduring, designed to withstand the test of time while providing utmost comfort and beauty.

From Dark and Dated to Fresh and Inspiring
The Transformation of a Home Office

At Rowan Hall Interiors, we thrive on creating spaces that not only meet our clients’ needs but also exceed their wildest expectations. Our recent office renovation project exemplifies this commitment to our clients’ dreams. Today, we’re sharing a detailed look at how we transformed a dark, dated office into a fresh, inspiring workspace that perfectly balances functionality and style.

Understanding the Client’s Vision

Our client came to us with a vision for their dark and dated office space. They wanted our Knoxville interior design team to reimagine the wood-paneled walls and coffered ceiling in a way that made working from home less dreadful. After meticulous planning, we decided that the dark wood was simply not in line with their personal style, and we recommended painting the entire room a light neutral shade.

The client was hesitant to jump on board but ultimately trusted our team’s judgment. While they didn’t particularly like the dark wood walls, they had an attachment to them. In another century, someone would have paid a lot of money for trim like that! However, for the transitional home we’ve designed for them, it was crucial for the clients to let go. Boy, are they glad they did!

Blending Tradition with Modernity

The client wished for a contemporary feel that aligned with the rest of their home. To achieve this, we blended the existing traditional millwork with contemporary artwork and furnishings, resulting in a transitional space that seamlessly flows with the home’s decor. Furthermore, the client requested a touch of masculinity in the office. To fulfill this, we selected materials like leather, iron, and wood, which, despite their robust nature, maintained an overall light and airy ambiance.

The client wanted a large desk paired with a comfortable chair for working, so we chose a wood desk with iron legs to serve as the room’s centerpiece. To complement this, we selected an ergonomic chair, ensuring both style and comfort. Additionally, the client desired a cozy nook for reading and relaxation. We designed a corner featuring a plush leather chair, complemented by a sleek floor lamp and a convenient side table, creating the perfect spot for lounging.

Execution and Transformation

The renovation process involved painting the millwork a fresh coat of light neutral paint, which significantly brightened the room, making it feel much larger and more open. We also installed a new, modern chandelier to add some drama. We kept the existing hardwood floors but added a large rug to make the space feel cozy and grounded.

We then selected contemporary furnishings, including the wood and iron desk and the leather lounge chair, which brought the traditional office design into the present century. Adding personal touches, such as contemporary artwork and carefully chosen decor elements, added character and warmth to the space.

The transformation was remarkable. The once dark and dated office became a fresh, inspiring place to work. The client was thrilled with the outcome, particularly appreciating the new light and airy feel. They now look forward to work-from-home days, enjoying a functional yet beautiful office space that supports productivity and comfort.

A Demonstration of Design Excellence

This project demonstrates the power of thoughtful design and the impact of even simple changes, like a new paint color, in transforming a space. At Rowan Hall Interiors, we are proud to create environments that not only meet functional needs but also enhance the well-being and satisfaction of our clients.

If you’re considering an office renovation or any other interior project, we’d love to help you bring your vision to life. Contact us today to get started on your transformation journey!
