A Cozy Kitchen
Part 1 of a Transformative Kitchen Renovation

At Rowan Hall Interiors, we believe that every home has the potential to become a masterpiece—a reflection of its owners’ personalities, preferences, and dreams. Sometimes our clients have loved their home well but desire to turn it into a dream home. This was the case for our Farragut clients.

After years of raising children and growing roots in their charming Farragut neighborhood, our clients decided it was time for a major kitchen upgrade. When we heard their vision, we couldn’t wait to turn it into a reality. What ensued was a transformative journey that redefined the heart of their home and left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

A Vision for Transformation

BEFORE

The project began with a bold vision: to create a larger, more functional kitchen that seamlessly integrated with the rest of the home. With the desire for a cohesive, modern aesthetic with a touch of rustic charm, our team set out to reimagine the space from the ground up.

The existing kitchen had served our clients well, but they had dreams of a more functional, modern space that fit into their evolved style. The footprint of the kitchen was small and the finishes felt dated for their taste, so we presented them with a plan for major transformation.

At Rowan Hall Interiors, we often give our clients kitchen makeovers without a total renovation job, like this kitchen renovation in Tellico Village. A fresh coat of paint on the cabinets, new finishes and updated hardware can make a world of difference. This is a great solution when we’re remodeling an entire home and delegating our clients’ investment throughout. In this case, however, our clients were ready to invest in their dream kitchen, so we got to work and put our plans into action!

From Gut to Glory

After demo and framing

Cabinets begin installation

Our plans for the layout of the kitchen revolved around removing an existing wall. Behind this wall was a hallway that led to the garage entry. Reworking this entrance into the new design of the kitchen allowed us to absorb this hallway space into the kitchen, giving room for more cabinetry and a large island.

This project would be nothing short of a full-scale transformation. Our wonderful trades began by gutting the kitchen completely and removing the wall. The cabinets were in great condition, so they were carefully removed and donated to the clients’ sister-in-law. The new garage entrance was framed, and the gutted space immediately felt worlds larger than the previous kitchen.

The new footprint centers around a large kitchen island that opens into the eat-in breakfast nook. Previously, this space had a peninsula with a raised bar, which can make a kitchen feel closed off to the rest of the home. The island provides much more storage space, countertop space, and openness between the two rooms. custom designed kitchen, Knoxville Interior Designer, Rowan Hall Interiors, Farragut custom home, interior designers knoxville tn

Elevating Every Detail

When it came to the aesthetic design of the kitchen, our clients wanted a look that felt like their own, while also feeling like it belonged in their home. Cohesion is always a priority, so we took into account some rustic elements in their great room such as wood beams and a stone fireplace. We wanted this space to feel timeless, but the clients were definitely ready for something brighter.

It was important for us to create a space that gives our clients the feeling they wanted without sacrificing cohesive design. Luckily, our clients were open to whatever our designers thought was best! We opted for a mix of stained and painted cabinetry. Our professional paint color consultants chose a neutral walnut stain and a beautiful light gray paint color.

We designed cabinetry that extends to the ceiling, creating height and drawing the eye upward. The clients wanted an elevated classic look, so we opted for an inset cabinet door design with minimal detailing. Custom doors hide the dishwasher and refrigerator, which makes the kitchen feel clean and uninterrupted. The color palette of this kitchen is really brought to life in the countertops from Triton Stone. Neutral veining runs through this textured quartz slab, bringing a bit of rustic to this brand new kitchen.

Timeless Elegance, Modern Comfort

Our goal is always to create a timeless, luxurious feel without sacrificing functionality and livability within a space. In a kitchen, it’s imperative that the clients are able to enjoy everyday luxuries in the form of functional living. Perhaps the most wonderful thing about working with a full-service interior designer is the integration of thoughtful design from beginning to end.

Your general contractor may not worry about where your paper towel holder will live or how you will store your spices, but your interior designer sure will! In this kitchen, we incorporated many custom features specifically for our clients. The coffee bar and beverage fridge make the perfect little drink station to enjoy on slow mornings. We also included three towers, creating the perfect hiding spots for small kitchen appliances.

The result of our efforts is a kitchen that exudes timeless elegance and modern comfort in equal measure. With its warm, neutral color palette, brushed brass hardware, and a mix of painted and stained cabinetry, the space strikes the perfect balance between classic and contemporary. It’s a kitchen that feels inviting, cozy, and effortlessly chic—a true reflection of the homeowners’ style and sensibilities.

Transforming Homes, Igniting Inspiration
A Vibrant, Award-Winning Home Addition Project

At the heart of every home lies the essence of family, where laughter, love, and memories intertwine. For our beloved clients, this essence expanded with the addition of a vibrant new space designed to foster togetherness and joy.

At Rowan Hall Interiors, we love meeting our clients where they are and improving their quality of life by upgrading their homes to suit them. You may remember our exciting Designer of the Year award in 2023, and it all began with a family outgrowing their home.

The vision was clear: to create a dynamic home addition where kids could play, watch movies, and create memories. The Rowan Hall team embarked on designing a space that seamlessly integrated with the existing home, offering both functionality and flair.

Bold, Original, and Tailored to You

Embracing a transitional style that would feel timeless and current, our talented designers curated a palette of lively greens, blues, and golds, reflecting the family’s vibrant personality. This infusion of color and pattern added a playful dimension while maintaining harmony with the home’s existing aesthetic.

The addition boasts a vaulted bonus room and a thoughtfully designed powder room. We incorporated a wall of colorful cabinetry beneath the television, providing both storage and style, while plush seating invites family gatherings and movie nights. Practicality meets elegance with a dedicated space for homework, games, and endless laughter.

At Rowan Hall Interiors, we believe that truly exceptional design goes beyond aesthetics—it’s about understanding and enhancing the lifestyles of our clients. One of the greatest perks of collaborating with us is our commitment to getting to know our clients on a personal level. We take the time to understand their routines, preferences, and unique needs, allowing us to craft spaces that not only dazzle the eye but also enhance functionality and usability. By integrating our clients’ lifestyles into every design decision, we ensure that each space we create is not just beautiful, but tailored to their everyday lives, bringing joy and practicality in equal measure.

Overcoming Obstacles

With every construction project comes a hurdle or two that requires our team to adapt and make the best of the situation. In this case, a giant boulder was discovered during excavation, which ended up affecting the size of the powder bathroom. Our options were to have this boulder removed or adjust the floor plan accordingly. The Rowan Hall team decided that the costly excavation would not be worth the outcome.

However, we didn’t want to sacrifice our exciting plans for a fun powder bath. A few square feet may have been lost, but our wallpapered bathroom dreams were not! This decision, though initially challenging, proved to be a strategic choice, optimizing the family’s investment and ensuring functionality without compromise.

The small bathroom packs a punch with fabulous Thibaut wallpaper, a blue painted vanity and a custom valance that ties it all together. These clients weren’t afraid of color and bold patterns, which is always fun for our interior design team! Alfie had fun creating a space that feels bright and airy while also honoring the clients’ bold, vibrant family.

Design to Last a Lifetime

Speaking of vibrancy, this family wouldn’t be complete without their furry friends. The pets in this household dare not be referred to as animals! Therefore, the couch needed to be built for all. With a nod to durability and practicality, our designers selected materials capable of withstanding the bustling energy of the family’s kids and four-legged companions.

We opted for luxury vinyl plank flooring that can withstand paws and bare feet alike. LVP is more durable than a traditional hardwood flooring and was the perfect choice for this family. For more information on how we choose the perfect flooring for our clients, read our Hardwood & Its Alternatives blog.

To bring in warmth and comfort, we chose an area rug to anchor the sofa seating area. We opted for a color palette and pattern that would effectively hide any dirt, crumbs or other daily messes. Of course, the rug is not only practical but also a beautiful way to tie in the colors around the room.

The furniture needed to be as durable as the flooring, as this would be where the family would gather often. We chose performance fabrics like Krypton to create durable furniture even in a lighter color like the sofa. The deep L-shaped sectional provides comfort and durability that is sure to last as this family grows.

A Fulfilling Work

The Rowan Hall team is so proud of this project and the recognition we have received. In 2023, Rowan Hall Interiors received first runner-up in our category at the prestigious National Interior Design Society’s Designer of the Year awards. The playful colors, eclectic patterns, and innovative accents made this one of our favorite projects of the year. We’re humbled that our work captivated hearts and ignited inspiration.

Even more exciting than a national award was the family’s delight with their new space. They revel in the brightness and liveliness of the design, finding joy in every corner. From family gatherings to quiet moments of reflection, the addition has become the heart of their home.

As we reflect on this award-winning project, it serves as a testament to the transformative power of design. Beyond aesthetics, it’s about creating spaces where families thrive, where every color, every texture, and every detail tells a story of love and belonging.

The interior designers at Rowan Hall love what we do, and we’re thrilled at any opportunity to bring new life into our clients’ homes. Contact our award-winning team today to get started dreaming up a project that will make your home complete.

A Grandmillennial Oasis
Reviving Tradition with Rowan Hall Interiors

Step into the enchanting world of grandmillennial interior design, where timeless elegance meets playful sophistication. In this blog post, we’re breaking down our latest grandmillennial  living room project, where traditional design elements are reimagined in a vibrant and modern context. At Rowan Hall Interiors, we pride ourselves on crafting spaces that seamlessly blend classic charm with contemporary flair, creating personalized havens that reflect the unique tastes and lifestyles of our clients.

At Rowan Hall Interiors, our goal is to transform spaces into sanctuaries—places that feel cozier, brighter, and more luxurious. Drawing inspiration from the classic silhouettes and a little bit of frill, our team of interior designers brought our clients’ vision to life in a great room update. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for timeless design, we curated a space that exudes warmth, character, and charm.

Customized Color Palette and Thoughtful Updates

Our signature approach to design begins with a deep understanding of our clients’ preferences and lifestyles. By maintaining a neutral base with rich gray walls and a neutral sofa, we provided the perfect canvas for our vibrant color palette to shine. Custom window treatments, patterned throw pillows, and custom boucle chairs in coordinating peach hues added layers of texture and visual interest to the space.

BEFORE

To prep the space for the luxurious furnishings we would be adding, we needed to update the room’s foundation. We began by refinishing the existing fireplace surround with a white marble tile. The clean, classic look of the herringbone pattern next to the original stained mantel seamlessly merged traditional charm with contemporary elegance.

We also painted the walls and ceiling to achieve a base palette that would compliment our design plan. Our professional paint colorist opted for deeper shades that would make the room feel cozier. The ceilings were tall enough and the room was large enough that the space could handle a more mid-tone gray without feeling too dark. This paint choice actually makes the final design feel even more quaint and classic.

BEFORE

Playful Details and Maximalist Approach

One of the hallmarks of grandmillennial interior design is the incorporation of playful details that add whimsy and charm to the space. At Rowan Hall Interiors, we love to embrace this maximalist approach, allowing creativity and personality to shine through in every design. Tassel trim and florals, once considered outdated, were reintroduced in an updated way, bringing traditional design elements into the modern era. This thoughtful blending of old and new creates a space that feels fresh, inviting, and full of character.

Like any true interior designer, Alfie loves the opportunity to play with all types of design aesthetics. While she loves incorporating antique pieces and vintage finds into her own home, some clients prefer a more minimalistic and current approach. Overall, design has trended away from big, colorful florals and frilly accents. At her 2023 trip to High Point Market, Alfie got a sense that the industry would be moving back towards more traditional, feminine, and whimsical design. This project is just a taste of what is to come!

A Symphony of Style
Transforming a Dark Basement into a Contemporary Haven

At Rowan Hall Interiors, we believe every space has the potential to become a reflection of its inhabitants’ personalities and preferences. In our latest project, we embarked on a journey to breathe new life into a dated and dim basement, creating a contemporary oasis that seamlessly merges transitional elegance with bold modernity.

The Vision

BEFORE

BEFORE

The problem was clear: the basement no longer harmonized with the rest of the beautifully remodeled home. Dark and outdated, this space needed a fresh start to become a family-centric area for relaxation and entertainment. The Rowan Hall team previously worked with these clients for years, remodeling almost every inch of their upstairs while leaving the basement neglected. Now, it was time for a change.

Our clients typically favor a contemporary look, yet their home leans traditional. In the rest of the home, we created a delicate, transitional balance. A total remodel of the basement gave us the opportunity to let the clients’ contemporary taste shine.

We love that these clients don’t shy away from bold color, but it was important to give them a neutral base so their favorite hues could shine. We opted for blue accents that give this space a classic and fun feel.

A New Foundation

Before we could bring in the fun furnishings and dreamy accents, we needed to address the foundation of the room. Carpet and dark walls were not exactly creating an inviting environment, and there was a dividing wall with a stone archway separating the basement. We decided to open up the space by removing the wall, which led to a structural dilemma and the need for a wood beam spanning the middle of our new open space.

Wood beams installed for structural support and architectural design

Navigating structural challenges creatively, we turned a necessity into a design highlight. Four massive beams, stained to match the new engineered hardwood flooring, became not just supports but an architectural focal point, adding an extra layer of sophistication to the room.

We painted the walls a light gray, installed new flooring, and our blank canvas was ready for the Rowan Hall magic!

Kitchen Overhaul

This basement hangout had a pretty dated eyesore that was probably amazing in some other decade. A fireplace + kitchen combo wouldn’t have been our first pick, but we wanted to work with the unique layout to create a more functional space for this bonus room.

BEFORE

Working with the existing structure, we transformed the space by adding more cabinets to give a more balanced appearance. We opted for a light, warm gray color to brighten the space, and replaced the countertops with a beautiful light quartz. We introduced a metallic glass tile backsplash to dress up the space, and ran the tile in a vertical straight stack to give the contemporary feel our clients love.

As for the fireplace, we chose to embrace it. The heavy stone needed to go, and we replaced it with a neutral tile surround. The finished look is sleek and modern, the perfect focal point for a cool basement hangout.

AFTER

Thoughtful Planning

To break up the long, open space and provide flow, we designed back-to-back seating areas, giving the family multiple areas to gather for movies and game nights. Both areas have cozy seating and upholstered ottomans, perfect for lounging. We broke up the space vertically by adding a set of beautiful lamps between the back-to-back sofas. This is one of those genius techniques that our clients love when working with our experienced designers. The room still feels open and airy, but visually, there is a clear separation.

One of the seating areas is anchored by the fireplace, and we opted for an L-shaped sofa to provide plenty of comfy seating. An important piece of the puzzle for this particular client was artwork. She really wanted something that spoke to her, so we searched high and low for the perfect options. In the end, she fell in love with this abstract figurine painting in shades of blue and gray, which perfectly ties in with the other blue hues we included.

We couldn’t resist a little grasscloth wallpaper, especially when our clients aren’t afraid to take some risks! This one in particular has a raised gold detail in a geometric pattern. The TV sits beautifully on this wall, and we also installed a floating cabinet to hide cords and consoles and other not-so-beautiful things. We truly think of it all!

Personalized Expertise

At Rowan Hall Interiors, we take pride in earning our clients’ trust through personalized expertise. Every decision is curated to suit their needs, ensuring a collaborative and enjoyable design journey. Personal touches, like the client’s cherished artwork, are seamlessly integrated into the design narrative.basement renovation, custom designed by Knoxville interior design team at Rowan Hall Interiors, Interior designers in knoxville Tennessee

The stark contrast between the before and after is a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design. The once dark and uninspiring space now radiates openness, contemporary elegance, and a neutral palette punctuated with playful pops of color that can easily evolve with the family’s changing tastes.

In every project, our Knoxville interior designers’ commitment is to go beyond aesthetics, creating spaces that tell a unique story and enhance the lives of those who inhabit them. This basement remodel is not just a room; it’s a symphony of style, where the elements of contemporary and transitional design dance together in perfect harmony.

Tellico Village Lake House
College Daughter's Retreat

It’s no secret that many folks are fleeing the wild, wild west for a more laid back, affordable lifestyle in Tennessee. This is true for our Tellico Village Lakeside Living clients who hired the Rowan Hall team to renovate their new home last year. We gave their great room a rustic, contemporary new look, brought their powder room into this century, made their primary bedroom an oasis, and even upgraded their kitchen

Although their fabulous new digs were purchased to usher them into their new chapter as empty nesters, the kiddos away at college still needed a landing pad–and it didn’t hurt that it would be lakeside! Their son claimed a basement bedroom, and their daughter decided a main level, hunter-green bedroom would be the perfect place to rest during breaks from school.

Gone With the Green

Although shades of green are certainly coming back in style, this particular color really dated this room. Furthermore, the green was only an accent to the two-tone chair rail style of decades past. Alfie is not a fan of this trend, especially not in a bedroom. It’s common to see this in a dining room, and in Alfie’s words, “it’s not a crime, but maybe it should be.”

Instead of removing the trim altogether, we opted to paint the walls and trim one color. The trim detailing is still there, but it’s not as noticeable. The paint job did wonders for this room by making the ceiling look taller and not breaking up the walls like before. With just one simple color change, the molding doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb and the room looks so much bigger. That’s the kind of expertise you get when working with experienced interior designers!

Carpet and Curtains

Next, we upgraded the carpet to something that brings more of an elevated feel. The subtle pattern gives the same effect that an area rug would bring to this space, so we chose to forego an additional rug for now. The existing valances had to go, so we installed custom window treatments in a much more modern style. We opted for our signature pleated panel with simple black hardware–a classic look that will be “in” for years to come!

We decided to give this spacious bedroom a lounge area, primarily for their daughter to use when she’s home from school. Our vision was a comfortable space where she could curl up with a book or sit back and enjoy the views of Tellico Lake. This room can double as a guest suite for other visitors or a retreat for anyone in the household. During the height of Covid, it was prevalent on peoples’ minds to have alternative workspaces in their home, and this would also make a great place for that.

Classic with a Flair

The clients purchased a new bed for the primary suite, but their old one was still beautiful and in great condition. We decided to utilize that bed in this room, while bringing in new bedding and nightstands to make the space feel brand new.

We wanted to keep the overall space very classic and timeless, but incorporated some retro-inspired elements to give a more modern feel. We brought in custom pieces that were arranged in a way that makes the room feel much bigger. A geometric table with a wood top combines the mid-century vibe with the rustic touches sprinkled throughout the home.

Finally, the finishing touches complete this relaxing bedroom oasis. Calming shades of light green, nature-inspired artwork and natural elements make this room a retreat to be missed while the clients’ daughter is away at school. Something tells us that’s exactly what they were hoping for!

If your kiddos are grown and moved off, their childhood bedrooms might be collecting dust and unsuitable for guests. Maybe you’ve moved and want to give your adult children a place to land that can be useful to you while they’re away. The Rowan Hall team can help turn your extra bedroom into a multi-use space where you can proudly invite guests to stay! Contact Rowan Hall today, and by next Thanksgiving your home will be ready to host the entire family.
