Trendspotting at High Point Market 2024
Top Trends as Seen by Alfie Rowan
Part of being a professional interior design firm is keeping up with the latest and greatest in design. From new trends to new inspiration, it’s important for our Knoxville interior designers to stay on the cutting edge of what’s new and noteworthy.
Each year, lead designer Alfie Rowan has the opportunity to attend High Point Market, the nation’s largest interior design trade show. High Point, North Carolina is just a hop and a skip away from our interior design firm in Knoxville, Tennessee, so we hardly miss this annual event.
At High Point, Alfie discovers a treasure trove of innovative ideas and cutting-edge designs that are set to redefine the world of interior design in the next year. From luxurious materials to bold color palettes and timeless design aesthetics, Alfie loves to soak up every bit and bring her new knowledge home to her clients.
There are countless reasons why Alfie goes to Market each year, but perhaps the most fun reason is seeing the emerging trends. This year, there were a plethora of noteworthy things to see. Today, we’re sharing the top trends that Alfie noticed at this year’s event.
Burl Wood: Embracing Natural Elegance
One trend that caught Alfie’s eye in mass abundance at High Point Market was the resurgence of burl wood in furniture and decor. Known for its rich, swirling patterns and organic beauty, burl wood adds a touch of natural elegance to any space. From coffee tables and sideboards to accent chairs and decorative accessories, furniture designers are incorporating burl wood into their creations to bring warmth and character to interiors.
At every turn, Alfie spotted Burl Wood in varying shades and shapes. The rich texture of these pieces automatically brings an air of luxury to a space, and the finish is really very versatile. Dark burl wood brings moodiness and depth, while the lighter, warm burl wood can have a retro or coastal feel. Overall, the gray wood from Market’s past is making way for warmer wood tones that feel fresh and updated.

Pops of Purple: Infusing Vibrancy and Sophistication
As predicted by Sherwin Williams’ color of the year, the design world is purple obsessed! Earth tones are still having their moment, but pops of this regal hue are being incorporated to add vibrancy and sophistication.
Alfie saw this unexpected accent color in upholstery, throw pillows, artwork, rugs, and more. The addition of purple shades was noteworthy and a diversion from what we’ve seen in the past. Deep, rich purples and soft pastels alike are making bold statements in design. We’re kind of loving the sense of luxury and refinement these shades add to a space! If you’re looking to add a fresh flair to your home, maybe pops of purple are just what you need. Contact our team today, and we’ll help you decide.
Shades of Green: Bringing the Outdoors In
To Alfie’s delight, green continues to reign supreme as a dominant color trend in interior design. She noticed a variety of shades on display at High Point Market, from soft sage and muted olive to vibrant emerald and deep forest green. Designers are embracing the versatility of this soothing hue to bring the tranquility of nature indoors.
Whether used in upholstery, wallpaper, or decor accents, green creates a sense of balance and harmony in any space, making it a timeless choice for modern interiors. Deep green upholstery is always a staple in design, but we love to see fresh takes on a classic. Pretty sage tones are hot right now, sometimes acting as a neutral and other times bringing an earthy pop. We always love to see what’s new with Thibaut, and this year’s feminine, pastel display did not disappoint. The soft shades, traditional silhouettes, and formal layout create the most beautiful space.
Maximalism/Traditional Design: Celebrating Opulence and Grandeur
While minimalism has long been a dominant trend in interior design, Alfie observed a shift towards maximalism and traditional design aesthetics at this year’s High Point Market. From ornate furniture pieces and intricate detailing to rich textures and lavish finishes, designers are embracing opulence and grandeur in their creations. Bold patterns, luxurious fabrics, and statement accessories are all key elements of this trend, creating spaces that exude elegance and sophistication.
Alfie was taken by the abundance of chaise lounges which evidenced this shift in styles.”There were chaise lounges everywhere! Big ones, small ones, modern ones, classic ones,” Alfie reflected. They aren’t usually so prevalent, so this was noteworthy. The chaise lounge isn’t always the most versatile or practical piece, but rather a luxurious addition we see throughout history. This shows how the design world is taking a more formal approach to modern design.
